WHEN HIS PLATOON WAS CAUGHT BETWEEN THE CROSSFIRE OF AN ENEMY RIFLE AMBUSH AND MORTAR BARRAGE, PVT RIVERS PUT HIMSELF INTO A LINE OF WITHERING ENEMY FIRE AS HE MANEUVERED TO A COVERED POSITION FROM WHICH HE COULD EFFECTIVELY ASSAULT AND RETURN FIRE ON ENEMY POSITIONS. HE CONTINUED HIS DIRECT FIRE AT GREAT RISK TO HIS OWN SAFETY, RESULTING IN THE ENEMY'S EVENTUAL RETREAT AND THE PLATOON'S SAFE PASSAGE THROUGH THE AMBUSH KILL ZONE. His outstanding initiative, leadership, and logistics abilities produced greatly improved supply, maintenance, and financial programs in the Battalion and led to a twenty percent increase in equipment serviceability rates for the Battalion.
