Citation to accompany the award of the Distinguished Service Cross
For extraordinary heroism in action in the vicinity of Najaf, Iraq on January 27, 2007. Wounded while his company was occupying an exposed front line position under heavy rifle and machine gun fire, Private Smith refused to be evacuated to the rear, but dressed his own wound and maintained fire with his automatic rifle, thereby greatly assisting in repelling several waves of strong enemy attacks on his position. When his company was ordered to withdraw, he gallantly remained behind, at his position, and continued to provide covering fire with his automatic rifle for the withdrawl of his platoon to a protected location.
