Personal Hygiene/Body Odor Counseling

PURPOSE OF COUNSELING

Event-oriented Counseling for Social Courtesy/Personal Hygiene

TC 4-02.3, Field Hygiene and Sanitation

SUMMARY OF COUNSELING

On several occasions, you have come into the office soaked with perspiration and emitting a strong and unpleasant odor. Several coworkers have commented on your lack of consideration.

While occupying government quarters or working in close or confined spaces, it is everyone's responsibility to maintain proper personal hygiene IAW TC 4-02.3, Field Hygiene and Sanitation and AR 670-1, Section 3-2.d. Hygiene and Body Grooming.

Working as closely together as we do, requires extra rigid standards of personal grooming. What might be acceptable in garrison or in the shop is not acceptable in the close confines of this office.

To reiterate the standards:

1. Everyone must bathe at least once a day or more often if required.

2. The use of aftershave, perfume, or body sprays is prohibited.

3. Uniforms must be washed regularly, at least once a week and more often if needed.

4. Fingernails must be kept short and clean.

PLAN OF ACTION

SGT Young and I will discuss the situation and decide on a solution. If it is because you work out at lunch and then don't have time to shower afterwards, you must either stop working out or make time for a shower before coming to work. If shower facilities are not available, we'll look for alternatives.

In addition, if this issue is not resolved immediately, I will begin weekly inspections IAW TC 4-02.3, Field Hygiene and Sanitation, 3-5, to ensure:

o They have sufficient personal hygiene supplies: soap, washcloths, towels, a toothbrush, dental floss, fluoride toothpaste, and razor and razor blades (plus sanitary napkins or tampons for females)

o Undergarments are cotton (not silk, nylon, or polyester)

o Uniforms fit properly

o Soldiers have several pairs of issue boot socks

o Soldiers receive needed oral health care and that all oral health appointments are kept

SESSION CLOSING

The bottom line is that you must arrive at work well rested, sober, and ready to work. This includes being freshly showered and fed. In addition, your uniforms must be clean, dry, and serviceable. All of us need to show consideration for those around us who work in close proximity.
