Initial Counseling, S-3 Gold Star

Daily Duties: The S-3 is a TEAM effort. No matter the situation, if you are not engaged, you are expected to help out your battle buddies to ensure maximum efficiency of the team. I should never see someone struggling while you stand by idle. As far as your primary duties are concerned they are stated as:

"Performs escort duties of personnel on the installation, moves, modifications, cable infrastructure, and testing of communication circuits in support of local/long haul communications (voice, data, and video). This includes escorting for personnel who conduct site surveys, reviews floor plans; designs standards compliant technical solution and prepares Statements of Work and Independent Government Cost Estimates for major upgrade to existing or new implementations of cable plant facilities. Develops proposed cable plant and switch node support infrastructure, and documents proposed solution using automated Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software."

PRT: I realize you are still recovering from surgery, do everything you can to stay fit and maximize everything you can do within the limits of your profile.

Accountability: Be where you need to be, when you need to be there. This seems to be a problem for you. You only stay a short 5 or 10 minute walk from our formation site. Stick with the standard 10 minutes prior and you can't go wrong. In the event that you are going to be late, you need to contact me so that I can be aware of the situation. Multiple incidents of tardiness in the future will result in negative counselings and or UCMJ at this point.

Military Appearance: Your military appearance needs to be I.A.W. AR 670-1 which states Soldiers must project a military image that leaves no doubt that they live by a common military standard and uphold military order and discipline. NCOs in our office have had to correct you multiple times on your shaving. Keep your appearance consistently within standards.

Military Bearing: You are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner. Be tactful with all team members and maintain a good working relationship. Show respect and courtesy to NCOs and Officers. Report problems to your first line first so we can work them out before they affect you or anyone on our team. You have seasoned NCOs at every level in the S-3, soak up some of their experiences and knowledge during the rest of your time here in Stuttgart.

Off-duty: Always watch your conduct off-duty. Incidents can have far-reaching effects and cause UCMJ action (especially alcohol related incidents), a loss of a possible promotion and/or awards. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid traveling alone. Overseas there a many people who may want to harm us.

Career Progression: Education is highly encouraged. If you have not completed SSD-1, or maxed out correspondence courses, I highly encourage you to do so. These are ways for advancement that are completely within your control. I know you are one year away from your degree back in the U.S. do what you can to see if you can CLEP something for the short time you are here. Soldier of the month is an easy way to earn awards (we tried to set that up for you), set yourself apart from your peers, I can help you prepare just let me know. I will push you but I will not hold your hand. I am on your side and want you to be successful. If you are not sure about something, ask me for guidance. That's why I'm here.
