For extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. During the period 19 January 2010 to 18 January 2011, the 20th Engineer Battalion and the cited units displayed exceptionally valorous service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The units provided mission critical support to the decisive actions of Operation Moshtarak in Helmand Province and Operation Hamkari throughout Kandahar. The battalion and the cited units displayed the courage, drive and ingenuity to excel in its dangerous mission beyond the call of duty. The unit's proficiency in route clearance and counter improvised explosive device operations allowed maneuver units unparalleled freedom of movement during deliberate operations in key contested terrain in order to turn the tide on the insurgency in Kandahar and deny the enemy use of its must casualty producing weapon. The dedication and outstanding performance of the 20th Engineer Battalion and the cited units are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon its Soldiers, Regional Command South, the International Security Assistance Force and the United States Army.

For extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. During the period 1 May 2009 to 10 February 2010, the 4th Engineer Battalion and the cited units' mission execution and commitment to excellence set a new standard for route clearance and route reconnaissance operations in southern Afghanistan. The units proved to be instrumental to the overall success of Regional Command-South. The 4th Engineer Battalion and the cited units provided intelligence based route clearance support to NATO and Coalition Forces deliberate operations. The actions of the 4th Engineer Battalion and the cited units are in keeping with the finest traditions of armed conflict and reflect great credit upon its Soldiers, International Security Assistance Forces, United States Forces-Afghanistan and the United States Army.

Valorous Unit Award

For extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy. During the period 29 January 2006 to 28 January 2007, 2d Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment and its subordinate unit displayed extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom VII and VIII. The unit valorously fought a determined enemy in the most austere and rugged conditions in the Paktika and Helmand Provinces, contributing to the peace and prosperity of the people of Afghanistan. Each company was involved in a series of hostile engagements and inflicted devastating casualties on enemy organizations while completing a variety of tasks and missions. The unit facilitated the disruption of Taliban operations alongside multinational forces, successfully captured one of the most significant weapons caches in Operation Enduring Freedom, and detained or eradicated several key insurgent commanders. The 2d Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment and its subordinate unit's outstanding performance of duty is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflects distinct credit upon the unit, the 10th Mountain Division and the United States Army.
