RTO Duty Descriptions

25U2O Infantry Platoon RTO (non-leadership)
Expert in radio procedures, report formats such as close combat attack, call for indirect fire, medical evacuation; proficient with field expedient antennas; maintains communication with company headquarters; informs the platoon leader and reestablishes communication if communication with the platoon's next higher element is lost; conducts radio checks with higher according to unit SOP when in a static position; preserves frequencies and call signs on his person in a location known to all Soldiers in the platoon; assists with information management and the employment of digital mission command systems; determines combat load prior to operations and manages battery utilization during operations.




Radio Operator
Performs duties as Radio Operator; tests, maintains, and keeps all radios operational at all times; interfaces with maintenance; maintains situational awareness; maintains constant, secure communication with assigned units and distant ends; monitors all radio traffic around the clock; enforces radio discipline; records all incoming and outgoing transmissions; upchannels changes and updates with urgency; keeps supported units apprised of current events, changes and impending changes; integrates with TOC and performs other duties as assigned.




Radio Telephone Operator (RTO)
Serves as the Radio Telephone Operator of a deployed Combat Sustainment Support Battalion with an assigned strength of over 1,400 Soldiers in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom VI; maintains the critical link between the companies and battalion leadership; receives, processes, disseminates, and tracks critical information in a timely and accurate manner; records all actions of the staff using a DA Form 1594 (Staff Journal); updates charts and overlays; takes spot reports, messages and relays messages; responsible for taking immediate action upon receipt of Commanders Critical Information Requirements (CCIR).




11B2O/SR RATELO
Serves as the senior radio telephone operator of an infantry company with an assigned strength of over 130 Soldiers; maintains the critical link between the company and battalion leadership; receives, processes, disseminates, and tracks critical information in a timely and accurate manner; records all actions of the company; updates charts and overlays; takes spot reports, messages, and relays messages; responsible for taking immediate action upon receipt of Commander's Critical Information Requirements (CCIR) or Essential Elements of Friendly Information (EEFI).




Command Post Specialist
Manages and performs activities within command posts (CP), operations centers, rescue coordination centers, and command centers; provides command, control, communications, and information support; receives and relays command and control (C2) instructions and records, and collects, processes, and submits manual and automated data products; establishes procedures for operational reports, readiness reports, and the Status of Resources and Training System (SORTS) report; reports international treaty compliance information; uses communications systems and consoles to affect positive control of assigned forces and weapons systems; ensures compliance with CP policies and procedures.
